Adaptation of the alpaca feed recipe

We have increased the vitamin D content in the feed. In Germany, in recent years, due to the drought and now the recent rainy seasons and the resulting deterioration in hay quality, knock knees and vitamin D deficiencies have become more common in alpacas. For this reason, we are adjusting the feed slightly, but still within a range that is appropriate for the health of the animals, in order to compensate for the lack of quality roughage.

Muesli or pellets?

The question that every horse owner has probably asked themselves.

Muesli is often preferred because it is easy to see what is in the muesli. In addition, the coarse structure of the muesli can encourage the horse to chew more.
On the other hand, muesli is more expensive to produce than pellets because the production process is more complex.
Muesli must be stored in a dry place as it can spoil quickly if stored incorrectly.

From this we can conclude that feed hygiene is better with pellets than with muesli. Pellets are also easier to store in terms of storage space and perishability. Pellets are also less dusty and can be fed to horses that are sensitive to dust. In addition, no selection takes place when the pellets are eaten.

We have both muesli and pellets in our product range. Take a look.

History of the Alpaca Pacos

When the Aabach farm started with alpacas (2002), there was hardly any special alpaca feed - and certainly not one with sufficient mineral values. After just a short time of keeping the animals, deficiencies were found in the animals, which were also clearly visible in their blood values. Together with us, the Aabach farm then created its own mixture using various mineral powders to provide the animals with the best possible nutrition. But this was terribly pointless; the mixing ratios had to be right and each animal should get the same amount. When the Aabach farm grew, we suggested making a ready-made mixture. This resulted in the first Pacos feed, which was continually adapted and improved over the years based on the animals' deficiencies together with the veterinarian and based on their blood values.

When we were all happy with the result and the demand for good alpaca feed continued to rise, we decided to sell the feed generally. To this day, with the help of the Aabach farm, we continue to adapt the mineral values to the alpacas and the German soil.
